Community Care Day 2018 – Redeveloped KWSH Welcomes the Community

24 March 2018 marked the first KWSH Community Care Day since the completion of the redevelopment project that featured our new 12-storey nursing home building as well as the restoration works of our four conserved buildings that will house the new KWSH Heritage Gallery among other amenities. Dr Amy Khor, Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Health & Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, graced the occasion as Guest Of Honour (GOH).

This significant occasion attracted close to 800 elderly from the community who enjoyed free health screenings and also picked up important health tips from the various health awareness programmes. The health programmes had been courtesy of our partners Fresenius Medical Care, Health Promotion Board, MyEar Singapore, Singapore General Hospital’s Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Singapore Women’s Association. In addition, our very own physicians were also on hand to provide TCM consultation to the event participants. Other highlights of the day included the food and games at the carnival as well as the delightful performances put up by interest groups from community organisations.

At the event, KWSH also enhanced our partnership with Republic Polytechnic (RP) through the signing of a new Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) aimed at fostering collaboration in training and capability building in areas such as fitness coaching and rehab for the elderly.

After witnessing the signing of the MOU, Dr Khor began her tour of the Hospital at the newly-opened KWSH Heritage Gallery where she appreciated Kwong Wai Shiu’s humble beginnings and learned about our illustrious history. The nostalgia continued when the GOH got to the “Memory Street” corner located at Level 3 of our nursing home building, a thematic day activity space designed after street scenes from Singapore’s older-day Chinatown. There, our Food Services department had prepared a buffet spread to showcase the selection of food that KWSH residents get to enjoy at our nursing home.

Following the completion of our redevelopment, a second Kwong Wai Shiu Community Care Centre (KWS CCC) located at St George’s Lane will open its doors next year. At the Community Care Day, the latest developments of the KWS CCC @ St George’s were on show at the exhibition area at our Community Building. Other exhibition displays at the area included the showcase of innovations and services by RP and our other partners. One exhibit that caught the visitors’ eyes was a made-to-specifications “privacy booth” created by the Singapore Institute of Technology. The booth, which one might have mistaken to be a resting space for our guests, has in fact been designed to soothe patients and will be especially useful in calming down agitated patients.

As we continue to mould KWSH into an integrated nursing home and community hub, the various exhibits had demonstrated KWSH’s commitment to work with our partners to enhance, expand and extend our services in our ongoing efforts to equip ourselves with a comprehensive range of services and facilities.
