104th Anniversary Celebration and Community Care Day 2014

At our 104^th Anniversary Celebration on 8 November 2014, Mr Patrick Lee, Chairman of Kwong Wai Shiu Hospital (KWSH), declared the opening of the transitional facility that will house the Day Rehabilitation Centre (DRC) as well as some administrative staff. This is to facilitate the next phase of the redevelopment.

In the midst of the redevelopment, KWSH is stepping up its services to cater to more elderly. In May this year, it had set up the Community Services department to provide home care services and caregiver training. There were about 255 home visits made by the Home Care team to date. It hopes to double its target number of clients by next year so that more needy elderly can age in place in the face of a bed crunch in nursing homes.

On behalf of the KWSH, Mr Patrick Lee expressed its heartfelt appreciation to all the donors and volunteers for their support. The recent major donations that came in during the months of October and November 2014 include a donation of S$330k from the estate of the late Mr and Mrs Lee Ah Kee, a tele-poll donation of about S$200k from a radio programme on FM958 generously sponsored by RedSun Pte Ltd, and also an amount of about S$532k raised from an on-going fundraising effort by a religious group (三皇五帝).

Three beautiful paintings were also donated by three very talented and experienced artists to KWSH for auction to further raise funds for the redevelopment. We specially appreciate the generosity of these artistes, Mr Chew Piak San, Mr Leong Chye Chye and Mr Loy Chye Chuan.

Apart from the opening of the transitional facility, KWSH organized a fabulous carnival for the elderly from the central neighbourhoods. Many charitable individuals and corporate organisations, such as Hewlett Packard, RE & S Enterprises Pte Ltd, Rider Levett Bucknall and Comfort Delgro, together put up a wide spread of fabulous snacks and delicacies for the carnival.  The other highlights were the health checks/consultations by a few volunteer doctors (from Singhealth and Singapore Women’s Association), and games and fitness activities.

It was a great sight to behold, seeing more than 1,100 happy elderly having a fun time at the KWSH premises. It was indeed meaningful to hold such carnival on KWSH’s grounds, which offer a historically rich environment that is filled with our forefathers’ legacy of kindness and compassion. On behalf of the hospital, the KWSH Board expressed its heartfelt appreciation to all the donors and volunteers for their continuous support and hoped for more philanthropists to come forward to volunteer and serve the community.
