As the aroma of pineapple tarts and the sizzle of bak kwa fill the air, the spirit of Lunar New Year is unmistakable. While festive reunions are often centred around food, maintaining balance and wellbeing remains important, particularly during periods of increased indulgence.
On 3 February, Associate Senior TCM Physician Teo Pei Si from Kwong Wai Shiu Hospital (KWSH) was featured in Lianhe Zaobao, where she shared practical advice on enjoying the festive dishes in moderation. From addressing “heatiness” (shang huo) to moderating sweet and savoury treats, her guidance reminded readers to celebrate mindfully while safeguarding their health. You can check out her interview here.
Extending this outreach beyond the media, Physician Teo conducted an herbal soup cooking demonstration on 4 February at Kallang Polyclinic’s Health Studio. The session formed part of KWSH’s collaboration with NHG Polyclinics to promote healthy living through integrative approaches that combine Western medicine and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).
Responding to growing public interest in integrative care, the session introduced participants to simple herbal soup preparations that complement everyday meals. Physician Teo noted, “Many people incorporate TCM herbs into their daily cooking based on family traditions. Through our outreach sessions, we aim to guide the public on the safe and appropriate use of these herbs, and to highlight important considerations when consuming them.”
KWSH and NHG Polyclinics intend to continue such community education efforts through additional cooking demonstrations later this year. Plans are also underway to introduce Ba Duan Jin, a traditional exercise rooted in TCM principles, to interested patients at Kallang Polyclinic. In time, KWSH hopes to extend similar wellness initiatives to other polyclinics, bringing accessible health knowledge and practical self-care techniques to the wider community.
For over 116 years, Kwong Wai Shiu Hospital has served the community with a commitment to holistic and compassionate care. Through education, outreach and collaboration, we remain dedicated to supporting individuals in making informed choices about their health and wellbeing.
This Lunar New Year, as families gather to celebrate, may the season be marked not only by abundance, but also by balance and good health.
