Community Spirit Sets Potong Pasir Nursing Home Alight
for Mid-Autumn Celebration
KWSH held our second Mid-Autumn celebration on 14 September 2024 at our Potong Pasir nursing home premises, and our donors and partners were invited to share the joyous occasion with our nursing home residents and other community elderlies.
At the celebration, the local community spirit was evident with our two next-door neighbours, namely St Andrew’s Junior College and Chapel of the Holy Spirit, playing significant roles in contributing to the festive atmosphere. All around the premises, beautiful lanterns adorned corridors and walkways. Among the lanterns on display, the fish-shaped lanterns at the garden area stood out, which were made by the elderly at KWSH @ Potong Pasir, together with members from Chapel of the Holy Spirit. Reverend Moses Ng from the church had sponsored the materials for making the lanterns so that church members could organise activities to guide our seniors in assembling the lanterns, truly displaying the community effort and unity.
The local community spirit was further enlivened when the concert band from St Andrew’s Junior College performed at our celebration for the traditional Chinese festival. SAJC students have been regular volunteers at KWSH and it was especially meaningful to have these teenagers celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival with the seniors.
The arrival of the event’s guest of honour, Ms Tin Pei Ling, delighted the participants, bringing about loud cheers and the MP for MacPherson greeted the participants with her wide smile. Ms Tin is no stranger to KWSH as one of our KWS Care centres is situated within her constituency. When the time came for Ms Tin to take the stage, the Potong Pasir crowd responded with a rousing ovation as she performed the song 城里的月光 together with CEO Dr Mok Ying Jang and our senior clients.
At the event, CEO Dr Mok also announced a new community food fridge initiative for Potong Pasir residents. Recently launched ahead of the Mid-Autumn celebration, the fridge is sponsored by iJooz and KWSH has been working with The Food Bank Singapore to stock up the fridge. For a start, members of our Active Ageing Centre at Potong Pasir will be entitled one free food item on a weekly basis. Kwong Wai Shiu will also be exploring other partnerships to secure more food sources to expand the initiative to all Potong Pasir senior residents. Beyond offering free food items to the elderly, the community food fridge also aims to educate fridge users and the public on reducing food waste.
As the Kong Ming and lotus lanterns carrying the wishes of the donors swayed in the sky and drifted in the lotus pond respectively, it was a heartwarming reunion beneath the near full moon with three days to go to Mid-Autumn Festival.
With a meaningful community initiative announced, it is indeed a time for us to say a big “thank you” to all our donors, volunteers and partners for your support toward Kwong Wai Shiu Hospital and the event!
