Official Opening of the Redeveloped Kwong Wai Shiu Hospital cum 108th Anniversary Celebration
On 6th October 2018, Kwong Wai Shiu Hospital (KWSH) officially opened our redeveloped premises to the public as the Hospital marked our 108th anniversary. The transformation started in 2014 and cost $96 million, making it the most extensive redevelopment project in our history. This completion makes KWSH the largest single-site nursing home in Singapore with over 600 beds.
Today, we are delighted to have Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong grace the event as our guest of honour as he unveils a plaque to signify the completion of the redevelopment. Prime Minister Lee was also invited to plant a tree at our iconic Pavilion Garden to commemorate this milestone occasion. About 250 guests joined in the celebration alongside Senior Minister of State for Health and Transport, Dr Lam Pin Min, Members of Parliament for Jalan Besar GRC as well as our Patron, Mr Wong Kan Seng.
The redeveloped compound now consists of a 12-storey nursing home building with thematic day activity spaces spanning across the various levels. The conserved buildings feature a refurbished TCM Centre, as well as a newly-opened heritage gallery and training facilities that surround our garden. Along with day rehabilitation, we also offer inpatient and outpatient services.
In addition, our training wing, named as the Community Training Institute, was inaugurated last month to drive the training and development of our staff and people working in the community care sector. Hence, KWSH now provides training courses which will benefit our partners and contribute to the overall healthcare landscape.
Within the redeveloped premises, the National Healthcare Group is constructing a 10-storey Kallang Polyclinic building, which includes a 128-bed chronic sick ward that will be operated by KWSH, scheduled to be completed by 2020.
KWSH has future plans ahead to have presence at six locations by 2021 including our main site, covering Whampoa, Kallang, Jalan Besar, Potong Pasir and MacPherson areas. Of these, there will be two nursing homes and four care centres.
As KWSH aims to be an integrated healthcare and community hub, seniors living in these estates will be able to enjoy the accessible and comprehensive suite of care services within the vicinity.
