From Care Centre to Centre Stage: Rehab Client Performs at KWSH Charity Concert

It was truly a collective effort at this year’s KWSH “Melodies of Hope” Charity Concert on 26 July 2024 as our rehabilitation client, KWSH CEO, Board members and the Minister all took to the stage to do their part for the annual fundraiser held at the historic Victoria Concert Hall.

The audience warmed to the concert immediately as Education Minister Chan Chun Sing, gracing the occasion as our guest of honour, got the ball rolling with the opening performance alongside the performing artistes. Joining the Minister on stage were Mr Ng Siew Quan (KWSH Deputy Chairman), Mr William Leong (concert Organising Chairman), Ms Doris Moh (concert organising committee member) and Dr Mok Ying Jang (KWSH CEO). Together, their heartwarming rendition of the 1977 classic 每当变幻时 ensured a rousing start to the concert backed by the music accompaniment of Ding Yi Music Company.

Helming the concert this year were local Cantopop sensations Wysom Wong and Allan Moo, with guest appearance by veteran Mimi Choo who has been an ever-present in the showbiz across Singapore, Malaysia and Hong Kong for over 50 years. In between, famed Cantonese opera performer Qi Chao Qun also treated the crowd to a fascinating display of the exquisite art form.

It was however Mr Lim Meng Chau who stole the show amid the star-studded line-up. The rehab and day care client from our KWS Care @ Jalan Besar centre played the erhu for the song 沧海一声笑 which also featured a solo segment of him. Taking the stage alongside Mr Lim in an “east meets west” setup at the concert was also KWSH CEO Dr Mok who charmed the audience from the piano.

The 74-year-old Mr Lim, himself a well-regarded Chinese orchestra musician in the local scene, was diagnosed with cancer two years ago and subsequently referred to our centre for rehab care after his surgery. Aware of his music talents, our colleagues at Jalan Besar encouraged him to participate in the centre’s music-related activities and it wasn’t long before the affable Mr Lim was voluntarily performing erhu for fellow clients at the centre every week, sometimes even taking in song requests! He is also one of the mainstays for the centre’s festive celebrations these days.

While Mr Lim shared that it has been a very fulfilling and rewarding experience to be able to bring joy to others with his talent, his on-stage partner at the concert, CEO Dr Mok, was also delighted to do his part for KWSH’s cause. Dr Mok, who is an accomplished pianist, said, “It was nice to be able to contribute to our fundraising efforts in a capacity beyond my day-to-day work. It was especially meaningful to perform together with Mr Lim Meng Chau as it epitomised Kwong Wai Shiu’s efforts in helping every client live life to the fullest!”

As members of the Kwong Wai Shiu family came together to churn out the melodies of hope, we thank everyone for your support toward the concert. Our gratitude goes to the generous sponsors and donors for contributing to our charitable cause and for making the event possible.
