Healthy Lifestyle Carnival '09

Free health checks ups have always been a regular activity in our community outreach program. This year April, in collaboration with Anlene, we had organized a healthy lifestyle carnival at Joo Chiat Community Center.

It had been our honour to have Mr Chan Soo Sen, Member of the Parliament for Joo Chiat Constituency as Guest of Honour for the event. The event started off by having our guest speaker, Professor Chia to present a talk on neck and spine injury prevention. Participants were also given free TCM treatments and bone density scan. The results have been whelming, with about 100 participants turning up for the event.

My Dream Shop!

Our Charity Shopping Cart kicked off on 20 June 09. Held bi-weekly on Saturday afternoons, the cart provides a mini shopping experience for the elderly residing in our hospitals and nursing homes.

Daily necessities, food and oldies goodies are sold in this cart. Our good oldies inventories include traditional snacks and sweets like the kaching puteh, hacks, soon kueh, Putu Mayam and even freshly baked waffles at times.

Our thoughtful sponsors have also been generously supplying us with traditional ear biscuits, vintage face powders and even straw fans, as well as individual toilet roll and toothpaste. These items are sold at prices set back in the 1960s. One of the residents who frequent the stall even says "I think I am back to my young days. Everything here is so cheap!"

This concept was adopted to allow our residents to have shopping experience despite staying in the hospital. Through this shopping experience, residents will be able to stimulate their brain cells by having to count for the amount of money upon making the purchases. We will continue to look for new things which could be sold to our residents.

Nature Restored

After months of discussion and planning, our garden of Ward 2 finally started its restoration last Saturday. The project was sponsored by Modec Offshore Production Systems (Singapore) Pte Ltd.

Over 30 volunteers rendered help in this gardening event. It was hard work for them all since gardening has not been their expertise. With tender hearts, the volunteers work hand in hand to plow soil and carpet grasses. They were also given the creative bulb to design and plant potted flowers around the garden.

The objective of this garden is to bring on holistic healing of mind and body. Patients will be greeted with the pleasant soothing sound of water gushing out from the new water fountain. Colourful flowers that set amid the garden transform the environment from the cold and fearful state to a cheerful and welcoming place for healing. The beautiful nature also aims to reduce boredom experience by many patients and creates a better experience during their length of stay in the hospital.
